Thomas Butler, General Manager at KMW Energy Group is a professional engineering with extensive background in process engineering and biomass energy systems. Thomas first became interested in biochar in 2007 after spending time in Tanzania working on charcoal manufacturing from agricultural wastes. Throughout University Thomas focused on torrefaction and pyrolysis oils, working at the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources at Western University and the Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry Research Group at Umea University. Joining KMW in 2012 as a process and project engineer Thomas worked on numerous projects for heating, power generation and drying, all utilizing KMW’s moving grate combustion system. Thomas focuses now on development of combined heat and biochar systems, and how this technology can be included in new heating and power projects to generate biochar, certified carbon credits, and heat or power. KMW Energy Group is working on several new combined heat and biochar projects across Canada and the USA, as well as upgrading some of our 100+ operating heating systems to produce biochar.
